Rotary Club of Tumon Bay
A Brief History...
On June 8, 1939, Rtn. Carlos P. Romulo, Director and Past President of Rotary International, was on his way from the Philippines to the R.I. Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. He had stopped on Guam and met with Justice Jose M. Flores and C.C. Butler after preliminary inquiries had been made by several local leaders interested in establishing a Rotary Club on Guam.
On July 14, 1939, the provisional Rotary Club of Guam was organized. Rtn. Rey Reynolds of the Rotary Club of Manila assisted with the necessary documents and the application was sent to R.I. in Chicago. On August 30th, the Rotary Club of Guam was admitted as a member of Rotary International as Club No. 5105 and the original Charter was issued and signed. The presentation of the Charter to the Rotary Club of Guam was made on October 21st by the then Chief Justice of the Philippine Supreme Court, George Malcolm, an active Rotarian from Manila.
In 1971, during PP James Underwood's administration, it became clear that as the membership of the club grew, action would have to be taken to insure that Rotary's principle of individual representation was not sacrificed.
Late in 1971, the Board of Directors formed a committee, with Rtn. Bill McAllister as Chair, to undertake a survey with the object of establishing the feasibility of forming a second Rotary Club on Guam.
Following a favorable report, the wheels were set in motion for the formation of a new club and the first meeting of the prospective Charter Members at the Guam Tokyu Hotel on January 18, 1972, the name Rotary Club of Tumon Bay was adopted.
On February 18, 1972, Rotary International officially recognized the club into the worldwide fellowship of Rotary.
The Rotary Club of Tumon Bay is the 15,011 club to be Chartered among 32,000-plus Rotary Clubs worldwide!
Today, the Club has 75 members with 62 active and 13 Honorary members of which 17 are women and 58 are men; 27 are active past-presidents; 56 Paul Harris Fellows; and 5 are contributing to the EVERY ROTARIAN, EVERY YEAR PROGRAM.
